I'm so clueless when it comes to guys, I need advice! Please help me with this situation im in.?

I kinda have a thing for this kid in my college class, but I think he only likes me as a friend. When we're in class, he always makes and effort to talk to me...and I mean always. But he never calls or texts or anything like that. I mean, I really don't call him either, but that's just because I'm kinda shy. But I do text. And I told him to call me last weekend of whenever he's free. I never got a call. So I'm pretty sure we're just on a friend to friend basis, if that. What do you think? And I'm find with us being friends, but I kinda wanna ask him to hang out over this weekend, but I don't know exactly how to. I don't want him to freak out and think that I'm asking him out on a date or anything. I don't mind being aggressive (some guys like that...right?), but I don't know if I'd be being needy now. I don't want that. I'm just so clueless when it comes to guys. What should I do? Is there a possibly that he has a thing for me too? Or just friends? Am I being too needy? I'm not sure what aggressive is to you, but you can make a move without being desperate. Simply ask him if he wants to hang out with one night or during the weekend.
